The Prohibition Train
In 1949, the Bombay Prohibition Act was enacted in the state of Maharashtra. Without a license, prohibited
to sell, consume or even be in possession of alcohol. The police launched raids on drinking establishments, going so far as to break into private homes. The punishment was severe: three months to five years in prison.
A solution was offered to lovers of cocktails and liqueurs: a mysterious train left Mumbai every evening at 6 p.m. towards neighboring states where alcohol was not prohibited*.
* The secret was so well kept that no historian has yet found a trace of these crazy evenings.
